2010 in concerts
as i mentioned before, i’m not to keen on making an end of year list - i tend to forget things, or haven’t heard a lot of records i should have heard. so not a ‘real’ 2010-list, but i’m safe about these things:
favorite live show:
liturgy (incubate festival, little devil, tilburg) encredibly ferocious, adventurous and athmospheric set, making me look forward to...
One year after Rowland S Howard passed away
‘Sometimes people are ready to go because they have been sick for a long time, but Rowland really wanted to live. Things were going well for him outside his health and he wanted to take advantage of that, and he was very disappointed that he wasn’t well enough to do so’ Mick Harvey
The best proof that Rowland S Howard was doing well - outside his health - is probably the...
why the beautiful band should win a bunch of mia's
this week, the nominees for the mia’s, the belgian grammy’s were announced. stromae, k’s choice, flip kowlier: blah blah. you know they’ll end up winning. however, at today’s event at the kinky star, we got to see a belgian band that should have been nominated as best group, best rock/alternative and best live act. the beautiful band.
unfortunately, they haven’t...

airplane problems can be a good thing
for those that had to miss a show due the the ashcloud a few weeks ago, and for those that are about to get in problems because of the new flight cancellations: problems with flights can be a good thing too. as sharron kraus mentions in the latest issue of the morc-zine: the album ‘travellers two’ by tau emerald wouldn’t not have been recorded is she and tara burke of fursaxa...

Before/after: hellvete on tour
the follow up to this month’s article about hellvete touring europe… Glenn brought his avant-folkscapes across europe, and this is what it taught him: - how was your first day back at work? euh… confusing… The day started with a meeting and after that it was back to the usual stuff. But it felt strange, not being in a car anymore with 6 other bad smelling guys listening...

Record store day
here in ghent, there arent all that many stores left to go recordshopping for an afternoon, as i noticed once again earlier today. just noticed that one of the stores i regulary visited now turned into a clothing store. too bad. however, a few shops in other cities i can fully recommend as a customer - all run by people who obvously really love the records they’re selling, and actually know...
new morczine out now
nothing quite like the smell of a new paper zine - well: new vinyl. new cds. new sleeves. but anyway: we printed the copies of the newest morczine - as announced, this one has interviews with the likes of black flowers, sharron kraus, jessica bailiff, richard youngs and signals. all these people frequently collaborate with others you say? you’re right. it’s a theme issue off course....

before/after: Hellvete on tour
one of the nicest -musical- surprises of the past few months was ‘De Gek’, the vinyl debut of Hellvete. a great blend of fuzzy drones, shoegaze, glooming electrical folk, and singer-songimprovising. we saw him opening for Little Claw last week, and can fully recommend his live-shows as well. before leaving on a two week european tour, we asked glen steenkiste, aka mr hellvete a...

– steve albini about the fraude at Homestead records. Magnet published quite an impressive article about the mess at the legendary avant-indierock label. well worth the long read.
in the making...
… a new print edition of the morczine. as the sleeve tells you, you can expect interviews with black flowers, sharron kraus, jessica bailiff and signals. richard youngs shares one of his recipes. and there’s more… expect this one to be ready in a couple of weeks. as usual, this issue is free - just one international stamp will do. and when ordering something via morc, even that...

The original sin
a good thing that it’s not just bands working on ‘comebacks’. after being quiet for a couple of years, The original sin has resurfaced as a webzine. didier was the first one to pay attention to a bunch of morc-bands (i recall reviews of eg circle bros, zent one, astroboy…) - and it’s thanks to him i got in touch with fine folks like mark ritchie (of kaw tapes, ritch...

why end of year lists are redundant
in 2008, i didn’t make an end of year list. no-one asked. and that’s a good thing, because i wouldn’t have put bird songs by triumph of lethargy skinned alive to death in that list. i’m familiar with spencer moody’s work as the vocalist of smoke and smoke (him + dan and mike of godheadsilo) and murder city devils. so god knows why i didn’t pick up this...
why the beautiful band should win the rock rally
this weekend, the first preselections of humo’s bi-annual rock rally are taking place. chances that this will bring as a few new bands like milow, jasper erkens or novastar (no, we don’t link to those). too bad. however, at yesterday’s kraak-event at the bunker, we got to see the only belgian band that deserves the attention (and cash) that a rock rally-winner should get. the...

coverstars adult rodeo
somewhere in october 2004, we put out the first paper edition of the morc-zine, with adult rodeo being the cover stars. no idea if they’re still around really (visiting their website was a bad idea). anyway, you still pick up their records ‘the kissyface’ and ‘texxxas’ if you have the chance… for your convenience, we’ve uploaded the full interview as a...
